It was the most exciting time of the year – Onam was just around the corner. She dutifully marked each day leading up to the festival on the calendar with a small tick. When the sun finally dawned on the day she’d been waiting so eagerly for, she hurriedly took a shower, wore her festive best and hurried to the town square, where she joined her peers for the ‘pookalam’ or flower rangoli competition.
