For the longest time, she perceived shadows as hollow spaces, little blobs of nothingness where even light never ventured in. But that was until she heard an old gazal whose refrain was themed on a ‘rangeeli parchaai’, or a colourful shadow. For the first time, it compelled her to think of a shadow as an entity in itself, instead of one whose existence was defined by the absence of another. She realised then that a shadow is much like the impression you leave on those you encounter – people, places and even things. And, before she knew it, her mind had drifted back to the people that had made the strongest impression on her - her childhood friend whose kindness shone the brightest when they first met at the age of 5… she’d fallen off a swing and he helped her up; her landlady whose eccentricities were evident in the countless face masks she hung up on the walls of her house; her favourite professor who always started class with a new poem that he’d written himself. She wondered about the impression she left. Little did she know, her lopsided smile shone the brightest on the darkest days, her mere appearance could uplift those around her, and the bounty of knowledge she imparted in the most casual conversations would resonate in people’s minds for months to come.
